Choose Between WAIST and WASTE

APPROPRIATE PORTION SIZES with Healthy Chef Prepared Meals Delivered

We live in a giant, economy-sized world where we have all been conditioned from an early age to believe that more is better.  Super-size packaging has caught on everywhere, from the supermarket to the convenience store.  Consumers expect large portions and believe they’re not getting their money’s worth unless they get the largest size for the lowest price.  While this may appear to be good for your pocketbook, it is a disaster for those of us who are trying to watch what we eat!!

When we buy the family-sized package just for ourselves, we often have to choose between WASTE and WAIST!  Having an excess amount of food in the house tends to influence us to eat more than we need rather than let it go to waste or go stale.  We have succumbed to the “big gulp” mentality and we let our portion size selection be determined by perceived value rather than common sense and good health.

Some restaurants now feature…

  • 16-ounce steaks (one whole pound)
  • Portions of prime rib that start at 12-ounce servings
  • Hamburgers that contain a half-pound of ground meat

However, the USDA says a serving of meat is a 3-ounce cooked portion.  YIKES!!

Most popular diet books that give the number of calories per food portions use the USDA’s recommended size per serving.  But, most Americans eat portions that are much greater than these recommended amounts.  In random surveys, Americans almost always underestimate the quantity of food they have consumed.

Knowing how cooking affects the volume of food can help you determine the amount to cook in the first place.  If you cook and serve the appropriate amount of food, you will be much less likely to overeat.  To determine an appropriate portion size for meat, start with the weight on the package.  If you buy a package of boneless, skinless chicken breasts that weighs 1 pound, you know that it is 16 ounces.  Sixteen ounces of raw meat will shrink approximately 25% when you cook it, which gives you 12 ounces of cooked chicken.  If you are serving the recommended 3-ounce portion, then you have enough for four servings in a 1-pound package of raw chicken.

Here’s another example: If you are cooking for two, serving rice for dinner and wish to serve the recommended 1/2 cup to each person, then start with 1/3 cup of uncooked rice.  Since rice triples in volume when you cook it, 1/3 cup of raw rice will give you 1 cup (or two 1/2 cup servings) of cooked rice.

There are a lot of common household items that you can use to estimate serving size; learning how to do this is especially useful when eating away from home. Below are some examples:

3 oz. of cooked meat or poultry | Size of a deck of cards

1/2 cup cooked rice | Size of a tennis ball

1 medium potato | Size of a computer mouse

1 oz. of cheese | Size of 4 stacked dice

GROWING PORTION SIZES

Food portion sizes have been increasing for over 30 years. In the 1950s, a “family size” bottle of Coke was 26 ounces; today a single-serve bottle is 20 ounces.  McDonald’s original hamburger, fries, and 12-ounce Coke provided 590 calories.  Today, when you order a super-sized “Extra Value Meal” including a Quarter Pounder with cheese, super-sized fries, and a super-sized Coke it delivers a whopping 1,550 calories.  A typical bagel used to weigh 2 to 3 ounces, compared to 4 to 7 ounces today.

While portion sizes started to increase in the 1970s, they spiked sharply in the 1980s and have continued to increase ever since. Not surprisingly this trend has occurred in parallel with increases in overall calorie intake, the prevalence of obesity and the diabetes epidemic.

Although portion sizes and obesity rates have grown rapidly, larger food portions are not solely responsible for America’s obesity epidemic.  Many factors influence body weight; however, it is excess energy intake (i.e. consuming too many calories) that “out-weighs” all other causes.  According to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), between 1978 – 1995, our average daily caloric intake increased from 1,876 kcal to 2,043 kcal.  This 167 calorie-per-day equates to an extra 17 pounds of body fat every year!!

Test Your Portion Size IQ

Do you know what a serving should look like?

Twenty years ago, an average meal at a fast-food restaurant consisted of a small burger, a couple handfuls of fries, and an 8-ounce soda.  Today, your order may include a double or triple hamburger with cheese, “supersized” fries, and a 20-ounce soda.  Portion sizes at home have increased as well.

Of course, what we eat also matters to our health.

Eating too many vegetables is NOT the reason Americans are faced with an obesity crisis.  Experts say that our preferences for calorie-dense foods, as well as our tendency to get too little exercise contribute to our expanding waistlines. But out-of-control portions are no doubt a factor!!

Do you need to retrain your healthy eating habits and brain to recognize a healthy portion size??  If so, Success Meals KC would love the opportunity to work WITH you to UN-Super-Size your meals!!  Healthy meal delivery in Kansas City is our specialty, which is why Success Meals is Kansas City’s #1 diet meal delivery service!

New Year..New You! Create Good Habits in 2017!

Did you know that procrastination is a habit? When there’s something you know you should do, but you choose not to do it immediately… you make it more likely that you’ll procrastinate again in the future.

Action and initiative are also habits. Every time you take quick and decisive action… you make it much more likely to take action again in the future!!

Habits are Powerful

A habit is an automatic behavior pattern that you perform with little or no conscious thought because repetition has embedded that behavior in your subconscious mind. Nearly all the actions you take every day are habits… the time you get up in the morning, what you eat for breakfast, the route you take to work each day, and so on.

Habits are like swift currents; it’s easy to let them sweep you downstream, but it’s very difficult to swim upstream… against the flow. That’s why you must develop good habits that move you in the direction you want to go. Good habits are difficult to form, but once formed, they are just as difficult to break as bad habits. Bad habits are easy to form because you don’t have to do anything to form them – you create them by default. Just choose to do nothing, and you begin developing inaction and procrastination as habits.

Some of you abandoned your exercise and nutrition programs completely this past holiday season. I don’t understand why anyone would completely “take a break” from health and fitness. Even on your free day, you still have structure… you don’t just eat what you want, when you want (or at least you shouldn’t). Maybe you’re having a few sinful meals, but still keeping your portions to a minimum and eating every three to four hours apart. I know that many of you choose to exercise on your free day. If you have a goal, any goal, why not do all that you can, every moment that you can, the best that you can, for as long as you can?

If you put your nutrition and exercise on “pause”, you will lose your momentum. Think about what Sir Isaac Newton taught us:  “An object in motion tends to stay in motion.” On the contrary, it takes ten times the amount of energy to create momentum (to get started back on your program), once you’ve lost your momentum!! It sounds easier to stay on track, doesn’t it??

Newton also taught us that “every action has a reaction.” meaning, if you chose to eat unhealthy foods and miss workouts there will be a price to pay. And that price will be at the expense of your energy, your health, your self-esteem and even your ability to focus. But, if you choose not only to continue but, even increase your personal improvement… you will generate the force to continue putting in effort. In return, your body will respond positively by providing you with: energy, clarity and continued progress towards your ultimate health and fitness goals.

The roots of a habit are formed in as little as 21 days. This positive momentum will in turn create a habit that you can carry on throughout the entire year!! You’ll put yourself in the group of winners who get in shape and stay in shape all year long.

I’m going to put you on the spot…

Today, at this very minute I’m going to ask you to make a choice. Because achieving your health and fitness goals or any worthy endeavor begins with a conscious decision to:

  1. Value and care for yourself by making the right decisions when pressured by the negative influence of others
  2. Struggling over your own temptations and shortcomings

Results are the best measurement of human progress. Not conversation. Not explanation. Not justification… RESULTS!!  And if your results are less than your potential suggests that they should be, then you must strive to become more today than you were yesterday.

The greatest rewards are always reserved for those who bring great value to themselves and the world around them as a result of whom and what they have become.

Take a moment right now to set some clear and achievable goals for YOU and take the first step!! You will be less likely to be affected by the influence of others and your resolve will be strong.

You have daily opportunities to make improvements and build upon your momentum. Make a resolution to be the best you can be every day, because the best way to predict your life in the year 2017, is to create it by obtaining a leaner, healthier you.

Finally, if you are not a member of our Success Meals healthy meal delivery program and are trying to make the right decisions about your dietary habits, consider making an appointment to see a registered dietitian. They can look over your eating habits and help identify what areas you need to focus on. He or she can pick up on emotional reasons for your excess weight and provide you with strategies to replace the need to binge or eat sweet, unhealthy foods.

Learn the Solution to Your New Year’s Resolution – Setting & Achieving Realistic Goals

Most of us are familiar with “diet cycling” and know that January 1st of any year means new goals! We make big plans to “LOSE WEIGHT”!!   We say things such as, “By Easter I’ll be able to wear my favorite pair of blue jeans”, “By summer I’ll be 30 pounds lighter and feel confident in my bathing suit while down at the lake”, and “By next year I’ll be at my ideal body weight and finally be able to scratch “weight loss” off of my goal list!”

During my years as a personal trainer I saw more New Year’s resolutions than I care to admit. These resolution makers would adhere tenaciously to their fad diet. They became committed to taking their “on trend” supplements at scheduled times throughout the day and they often exercised excessively every day after work; it was sheer will power in action.  The problem is, this “all or nothing” approach to fitness and weight loss doesn’t usually work.

Statistically this New Year’s resolution motivation lasts anywhere from one day to three weeks.  It’s at that point that the rice cakes, celery sticks and arduous exercise routine is often abandoned for a large pepperoni pizza with extra cheese and a night on the couch watching reruns on Netflix.  There’s a possibility that some of you experienced similar scenarios throughout your past new years resolutions, if so, you may recollect that this lack of discipline, leads to more disappointment in ones’ self and maybe even a resolve to give it another try and start fresh February 1st.

 What’s wrong with this approach?

Our bodies were not designed for such intense abuse and given a period of time our bodies will rebel and cause us to regain every painstaking lost pound. This approach is restrictive, depriving, unrealistic, short term and just plain NOT FUN!  Who wants to eat a cup of broccoli, then go to the gym and perform 60 minutes of hard aerobics followed by a half dozen carrot sticks and maybe a can of tuna fish?  Most people give up relatively quick out of sheer survival. However, the problem starts when instead of switching to a  “moderation” approach for their eating and exercise they go and consume huge portions of food, the types of food in which they had deprived themselves of the past two or three weeks.  And to compound this pig-out fest they do zero exercise!  Can you guess what happens next?  This one step forward two step back approach to weight loss more often then not, leads to more weight gain than was originally lost.

How does one get off this cycle?

Put it on Paper – First, sit down with a clean sheet of paper and a pen.  Draw columns from the top of your paper to the bottom and between each column list all the things, related to meeting your objective, in which you can improve upon.  Make a self promise to begin keeping track of all the items you’ve listed.  Your exercise regimen (cardio and resistance training if applicable).  Your daily water intake.  Your sleeping patterns.  Your free day eating regimen, and any other healthy and unhealthy habits you may have.  Doing this will give you an overall picture of your current health and fitness habits.

After making a list of all the things in which you can improve upon which, as a result, will enhance your health and well-being, not to mention, expedite your progress, assess which of these items needs the most work?

  • Are you exercising too little or not at all?

  • Are you not staying properly hydrated (you should be drinking half your body weight, in ounces, of water each day)?

  • Are you over indulging on your free day (i.e. eating too much per meal and only when you’re hungry)?

  • Are you snacking on “unauthorized” foods late at night?

  • Are you getting less than the required eight hours of sleep each night?

Write down what you think might be potential problem areas that are keeping you from getting the most out of your 12-week weight loss endeavor.  Then put together a fresh list of important goals. Take one or two areas from the list in which you just made, that you consider realistic for you to achieve.  Maybe you want to get your free day eating habits under control, quit smoking or increase your cardio regimen from 3 days a week to 5 days a week.  What kind of results do you think that you would see by making these changes?  You might just be surprised.  Small changes equal big results!!  I’ve seen people decrease their soda intake from 5 sodas per day to 1 soda day per day and within a couple of weeks they had lost weight.  Some people simply implemented drinking the required amount of water their body needed to stay adequately hydrated each day and simply stopped using table salt on their food, and what do you know… they start losing weight!  It’s amazing how our body responds to moderate, gradual changes.

Remember, your body is resistant to sudden weight loss. When you make drastic and sudden changes in your lifestyle such as excessively restricting calories your body believes that you’re experiencing a famine and therefore, will do everything it can to stop this process and preserve your present bodyweight.  But do know that your body does want to be lean and healthy!  It is counterproductive to carry excess weight.  However to convince your Body to let go of this “extra” weight you must incorporate small, gradual changes.  Slow but sure modifications are welcomed by your body and instead of working against you, your body will work with you.

Recruit a Health Partner- Try recruiting a “health partner.”  Someone to keep you accountable and who can help make the process more fun. This can be your spouse, a co-worker or a close friend.  This person’s must be someone who is capable of motivating you, someone who will keep you accountable, and someone who won’t sugarcoat things just to make you feel good.

Go See the Doc– When is the last time you had a thorough physical exam? Consider calling your primary care physician and making an appointment for your annual physical.  Have them do a blood chemistry analysis, including thyroid and hormone levels as well as check your cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL’s.

Hire a Personal Trainer– Something else to think about is hiring the expertise of a personal trainer.  Someone who can help you put together a realistic exercise program, one designed with your goals in mind.  A good trainer can get you motivated and guarantee that you’re performing the exercises correctly. Make sure and ask your trainer about their credentials.

See a Dietitian or Nutritionist– Finally, and most importantly, if you’ve struggled with food cravings and binges your entire life, you should consider making an appointment to see a registered dietitian.  These professionals can look over your eating habits and help identify what areas you need to focus on.  He or she can pick up on emotional reasons for your excess weight and provide you with strategies to replace the need to binge or over indulge on unhealthy foods. You can also consult with one of our nutritionists at Success Meals KC and we can customize a plan for you or work with the plan your dietician has recommended to ensure you reach your weight-loss goals.

Make Realistic Goals– To make a lasting change, you must focus on small, realistic goals, patiently make steady progress and always continue to implement new goals and improve upon current ones.

However you decide to approach the New Year or even tomorrow, remember these two things:

Your body wants to be lean and healthy.

Your health is in your own hands.

What is a Juice Cleanse Detox?

It’s the new craze … or is it?? We’ve had so many clients who have requested a juice cleanse or a juice detox that we decided to incorporate one into our weight loss meal delivery service!

Our juice cleanse or detox* program s a 3, 5 or 10 day plan.  Most of our clients use our juice cleanse weight loss program at the beginning of their Success Meals weight-loss program, or as routine care to cleanse or detox every three to four months. Cleansing flushes harmful toxic buildup from your body to improve your ability to digest, absorb and assimilate essential nutrients. As a result, your body will function better, look younger, feel stronger and think clearer!!

During your juice cleanse, the digestive process gets a much needed reprieve as regular meals are replaced with freshly made and nutrient-specific fruit and vegetable blended juices. Why juices? Research shows that juicing is by far the most effective delivery system for nutrients, which are essential during this detoxification period. Also, each of your juices have been designed to provide the specific combination of herbs, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants and phytonutrients that work synergistically to eliminate toxins, fuel metabolism, even out blood sugars, assist in weight-loss and heal from a long exposure to harmful impurities.

Why Cleanse?

Do you experience low energy, bloat, inflammation, weight gain, or the inability to lose body fat? Even weak immunity and many other harmful conditions are directly related to poor food choices made over the years.

We’re all familiar with the saying, “You are what you eat”, but this is more than just a catchy saying. It’s literally true from a molecular standpoint. Your body is made up of trillions and trillions of cells which are the building blocks of our physical life. Each and every cell is responsible for performing all of the different processes that keep us alive. Where do these cells get the fuel they need to carry out these bodily functions? You guessed it, the foods you consume every day!

If you’re like most people, you live a fast-paced, highly demanding lifestyle. In an attempt to save time, you’re making poor food choices. Opting for overly processed chemically altered convenience foods that are loaded with harmful toxins. Over time, your health begins to deteriorate. Accelerated aging, frequent illness and weight gain are just the beginning of a nasty list of symptoms and diseases that we’d all like to avoid!

The good news is that you can reverse or further distance yourself from many of these chronic conditions by incorporating a healthy lifestyle. However, before beginning a healthy and structured weight-management or weight-loss diet, it’s a great idea to prepare your body for a healthy lifestyle by including a brief 3, 5 or 10 day cleanse.

A 3 day juice cleanse or 3 day juice detox rejuvenates your body, creating an environment that’s ideal for absorbing nutrients, creating energy, eliminating toxins and mobilizing body fat.  And for those who already follow a healthy eating regimen or already participate in our weight loss meal delivery program, doing a juice cleanse every 3 or 4 months helps to further improve your level of health and vitality by restoring your body’s natural ability to utilize nutrients and eliminate toxins by kick starting everything from your metabolism to your energy levels.  Quite simply, when the body eliminates toxins, health flourishes.

How does it work?

Each morning, you will receive a delivery consisting of 4 juices and 2 salads. Together, these 4 juices and 2 salads contain all of the specific vitamins, antioxidants, herbs, minerals, essential fatty acids, fiber and other vital nutrients needed to keep you satisfied and energized while helping the cleansing process.

4 Juices

Comprised of a precise blend of vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices our all-natural juices have been designed to stimulate the metabolism, cleanse the digestive tract and eliminate harmful toxins all the while providing the body with the most beneficial amounts of vitamins and nutrients.

1 Large Salad

Dense with leafy greens, high fiber vegetables and a sprinkling of raw nuts, this colorful salad provides a sense of fullness and satisfaction while facilitating the removal of toxins and accumulated contaminants from the intestines.

The Secret to Successful Weight-Loss

We are here to tell you that you CAN lose weight and keep it off!!  We often see that while most people are able to lose the weight, they’re unable to keep the weight off and within a year’s time they do gain all the lost weight back. And in many cases, more weight is gained than originally lost. So how can you successfully lose weight AND keep it off?

Those who have lost weight and kept it off for more than one year share these four common behaviors:

  1. They eat a low-calorie, low-fat diet
  2. They are very physically active
  3. They monitor their progress by weighing and taking measurements frequently
  4. And, they eat breakfast

Healthy Diet AND Physical Activity:

To lose weight and keep it off health experts recommend a combination of a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. According to the National Weight Control Registry, only 10% of people who have lost 30 or more pounds and kept it off for at least one year succeeded using diet alone. Only 1% succeeded using exercise alone. But of those who combined both diet and exercise, a full 89% lost 30 or more pounds and kept it off for at least one year.

In addition to helping to control weight, physical activity decreases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and reduces the risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers.

Monitoring Progress:

Weighing yourself is a clear way to monitor progress or catch (and nip in the bud) a slow, steady uptick of pounds.  But, don’t take this too literally. You don’t want to make weighing yourself an everyday occurrence, as this may cause the opposite effect and rather than being a highly motivating event … it could cause you to lose motivation and completely throw in the towel!!  It’s fun to step on the scale when you’re succeeding. But what about the times when the numbers are super stubborn and refuse to budge?? It can make you feel like no matter what you do, your progress is at a stand-still.

Breakfast:

Eating breakfast every day is not what the average person trying to lose weight does. Most dieters make a weight loss goal and then proceed by getting up the next morning and skipping breakfast. Then, they have a light lunch and by the time they get home at the end of the day they’re starving and end up consuming most of their daily calories… or sabotage their day completely.  Successful dieters know that the body’s metabolism is highest in the morning and slowly declines as the day progresses. As a result, they consume the majority of their daily calories in the first half of the day taking advantage of their heightened metabolism and the ability to burn off those calories throughout the latter half of the day.

The last thing that people who achieve success at weight-loss know…

They accept the fact that there are NO SHORT CUTS!! True, there are tons of fad diets that may cause you to lose weight, but few if any prepare you for the task of maintaining your weight reduction once the weight is lost. Long term weight control requires the adoption of long-term healthy eating habits. It requires making healthy eating a lifestyle.

You don’t need to become a nutritionist or a health food nut to have a lean, strong, healthy body. The ultimate – and doable – goal is to eat well 80% of the time. Unfortunately, most people do just the opposite; they eat healthy 20% of the time and unhealthy 80% of the time. Success Meals, can make the healthy eating part simple by offering home delivered meals for weight loss that are customized to your preferences and goals!

All of your decisions and indecisions, your actions and inactions, have added up to create the body, health and life you know now. If you want things to be different in the future, you’ll have to start making different decisions in the present. When they say the future is now – it is. What you eat NOW affects how you’ll feel tomorrow… and next month… and next year.

We hope we will live a long life, but that we’ll also be “blessed” with good health so we’re able to enjoy our years here on earth. While you don’t have control over everything, you do have control over your health. RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW, you can take the first step to ensure your health is not a roll of the dice, a card from the deck or a random set of numbers on a lottery ticket. By investing time in nourishing your mind and body, you’re virtually investing in a sure thing.  Healthy eating pays back extraordinary dividends in terms of enhanced health and energy and subsequent increases in performance and productivity. In addition, a healthy lifestyle further distances you from the vulnerability to the diet related chronic diseases that plaque today’s society.

Are you ready to lose the weight AND keep it off this year?? If so, Success Meals would love to work WITH you through your journey to create a healthy 2016! Success Meals Healthy meal delivery Kansas City is our specialty, which is why Success Meals is Kansas City’s #1 diet meal delivery service!

Remember… Life is for living and food is the fuel designed to help us, not hinder us

TOOLS FOR PERSONAL GROWTH… SET GOALS

A goal acts as a form of a mental contract with yourself and your degree of motivation will drive you to complete that contract.  If the goal is too hard to achieve, it can affect your success.  The subconscious mind does not distinguish between big or little; it only knows success or failure.  If you set a goal to complete four training sessions each week but only complete three, then the mind sees your action as a failure.  For this reason, you must set realistic and attainable goals.  When you attain each goal, it gives you momentum to increase the level of motivation even further!!

TRY THESE GOAL SETTING TIPS:

  • Write down your goals
  • Set easy goals often so you create a habit of success in the mind
  • Tell friends and family about your goals for motivational support and accountability
  • Make any routine fun and exciting to help maintain interest
  • Try new challenging goals to stop your normal routine from becoming a chore
  • Reward your success when reaching a goal
  • Think positively, replace thoughts like “I can’t” with “I CAN” and “I WILL”
  • Don’t set goals that are too big, too early

Below, are some good guidelines and thoughts to consider as you are thinking about the goals you want to set for yourself.

►PLACE YOUR EMPHASIS ON NOW AND THE FUTURE

I have come across so many who live their lives while looking in the rear view mirror, rather than looking through the front windshield.  Enjoy ‘The NOW’!!  Stay in the moment and savor them, plan your future and create what you want to manifest with inspired focus and gratitude for the gifts you were given today.

►FEELING GOOD GETS YOU MORE FEELING GOOD

Feeling bad gets you more of that too.  Take care of your health and mindset.  Feeling good is a habit, just as feeling bad can be a well-developed habit.  You know what you must begin to include and exclude from your life to increase the good feelings you want to have!

►CIRCUMSTANCES CHANGE AND PRIORITIES OFTEN CHANGE WITH THEM

Are you certain that the goals you are pursuing today are goals in which you are still committed?  Or are they simply something you once thought you should pursue and you’re only hanging onto them in order to ‘be right’?  What we want in our 20’s will likely not matter to us in our 40’s and 50’s.  So take a little time for reflection.

►PUT YOURSELF IN THE DRIVERS SEAT

Take a closer look at where you say you want to go and where you are actually heading.  Are you driving or being driven?  Are you a passenger or do you have your hands on the wheel?  Are you in possession of a road map or are you wandering and wondering?

►THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS

Live your life as if every event were a part of a deliberate creation on your part, as determined by the Law of Attraction.  Your thoughts create everything that is showing up in your life today.  What you dwell on expands and manifests itself into the life you are now living.

►TAKE ACTION

Your much loved goals must also be followed up with consistent action toward their achievement. Do not think that affirmations, meditations and daydreaming will get you there if you do not ‘step into the space’ and ‘step up to the plate’ with deliberate actions in the direction you choose.  Faith can move mountains, but you’d better bring a shovel.

“Continuous effort — not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential.”
