Truth and Consequences … The reasons and the results of dieting in America.

Did You Know That …

  • Approximately 78.6 million of US adults are obese.
  • About 1/3 of children and adolescents ages 6-19 are now considered to be overweight or obese.
  • Americans spend more than $60 billion dollars a year on dieting and diet-related products.
  • About 1/3 of children and adolescents ages 6-19 are now considered to be overweight or obese.
  • 50 million Americans begin a new weight-loss diet each year. Of those 50 million, 47.5 regain all or more of the weight they lost. Dieters usually attempt 4-5 diets each year.

Can you empathize with one or more of the above statistics? Have you dieted and lost weight, only to gain the weight back again?

The dieting dilemma isn’t limited to regaining lost weight; it’s actually much more serious than that. You see, the vast majority of diets deprive your body of vital nutrients that are essential to good health. As a result, many people who diet suffer such low energy that they’re unable to adhere to an exercise program and often barely have the “get up and go” to even complete their daily work and family obligations.

To most, a diet is a double-edged sword. if you diet incorrectly, going too low in calories or depriving your body of certain nutrients, you’ll expose yourself to a host of serious health problems. Everything from rapidly aging skin to headaches, irritability, anxiety and depression have been scientifically linked to the inadequate nutrition millions of dieter’s experiences. Yet, by eating an arbitrary diet, high in calories, fat, sodium and sugars, you’ll sustain, or add to, an unhealthy bodyweight thus further distancing yourself from a healthy body and a vivacious and rewarding life. Being overweight has accounted for more than 300,000 premature deaths each year, second only to deaths related to smoking. Below, are a few health complications that people who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop:

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • high blood pressure
  • diabetes
  • gallbladder disease
  • joint pain
  • sleep apnea
  • osteoarthritis

So, what’s the solution?

I was recently working with a new client who had joined the Success Meals KC program on the strong recommendation of her physician. He had told her that her level of health was eroding and that she will likely face serious consequences, specifically mentioning diabetes, if she does not change her eating habits and lower her bodyweight.

I asked her to recollect all of her past dieting experiences, and we calculated back to her sophomore year in college. Through yo-yo diets, TV fads, exercise gimmicks and improbable weight-loss programs, she had lost more than four hundred pounds. However, during this same time period she had gained more than five hundred pounds. Even with one failed dieting endeavor after another, she continued down this same path of self-destruction, disappointment and dead-ends, trying the latest diet trend, purchasing fancy exercise equipment and taking every weight-loss supplement billed as “cutting edge”. No matter what the previous outcome, she naively believed that her forthcoming product, pill or program would be the one that would once and for all give her the body and level of health that she so aspired to have.

At the point of our discussion she had lost the optimism she once had. She was left feeling confused, frustrated and overwhelmed; she had fallen into the ranks of so many other individuals in overweight bodies, wondering if she’d ever be able to feel hopeful again. And now, rightly so, she was afraid for her life.

THE FACTS: There is no magic, no potion, no pill, and no single piece of exercise equipment that can guarantee you permanent weight loss. If anyone suggests the contrary, place both hands in your pockets, and walk backwards away from them as quickly as possible, because all they want is your money.

Diets hurt you physically and psychologically. Severely restricting calories blunts the metabolism causing the metabolic rate to plummet in an attempt to preserve fat stores. This is nature’s way of preventing starvation. As a result, you lose weight, and then gain it all back.
This yo-yo process makes you feel good about yourself, followed by guilt and feelings of despair.
Diets are a cruel joke of bait and switch. If diets worked, everyone would be thin. Instead, they are a not so subtle form of Russian roulette that includes the life-threatening consequences.
It’s so obvious that dieting is not the answer that, at times, I can’t believe more people haven’t woken up to this fact:

The diet industry continues to flourish to the tune of over $60 billion per year, yet each and every year more and more American’s suffer the ill-health effects of being overweight and out of shape. This alone confirms the fact that restrictive diets are not the answer.

The plain truth is that food is not the problem, so dieting can never be the cure. The antidote to dieting is to learn to live a healthy, authentic, balanced lifestyle; a way of life where you feed your body rather than deprive it. You realize that dieting does not mean eating less, but eating differently. Quite simply, the answer to achieving optimal health, vitality and bodyweight, is not a diet; “it” is a lifestyle!
